We would like to invite you to the experimental arts workshop developed in collaboration with the Leonardo Education and Arts Forum (a working group of Leonardo ® /ISAST), and the National Institute of Experimental Arts. The workshop will identify quintessential characteristics that constitute experimental art and explore how these characteristics can be delivered through art education nationally and internationally. We are living in a time when there are significant questions and the need for experimentalism and problem finding is of great importance to engage and contribute to solutions.
The workshop is relevant to teachers, curators, artists, arts administrators to assist in defining what might constitutes and experimental artist.
The four workshop leaders will set the stage with very short presentations that will create provocations to stimulate discussion by all the workshop participants. The group’s comments will be noted and used to present a summary of some of the essential elements and attributes that become part of a course outline for students.



Designing Art Science Cloud Curriculum Workshop

Location: Cornell Council for the Arts, Cornell University, Ithaca NY.

The Designing Art Science Cloud Curriculum Workshop presents its results engaging in research at the core of teaching Art and Science. The goal for the workshop was to develop a foundational set of definitions, practices and criteria that will become a globally shared transdisciplinary studio course existing outside of academic and art historical boundaries.

In collaboration with the Cornell Council for the Arts (CCA) and in conjunction with its inaugural biennial, Intimate Cosmologies: The Aesthetics of Scale in an Age of Nanotechnology,Leonardo Education and Arts Forum (LEAF) (a working group of Leonardo ® /ISAST) continued its successful international education event-initiative at Cornell University on September 20, 2014.

The workshop was led by associate professor Paul Thomas, Director of Fine Art Honours, University of New South Wales and visiting assistant professor of Studio Art and Director of the Cornell Council for the Arts, Stephanie Owens. The event brought together contemporary scholars, artists, scientists and theorists in art and science together to create the aims, objectives, attributes, bibliography and course work necessary to establish a fundamental set of considerations that would enable students to meaningfully engage in an integrated study of studio art and research-based science.

‘The role art education in an age of ecological crisis and the globalisation of knowledge’
The Leonardo Education and Arts Forum (a working group of Leonardo ® /ISAST), and the ISEA 2013 Education Workshop continue its successful international education event-initiatives in partnership with the Museum of Contemporary Arts (MCA) and the National Institute for Experimental Arts (NIEA) at COFA, UNSW . We are organising a forum to build on previous events in sustainability, transdisciplinarity, post media assimilation, art and science cloud curriculum that is linked to a developing body of knowledge in the area of Science, Technology, Art, Engineering, Art and Mathematics (STEAM) and Science, Engineering Art and Design (SEAD).
Educational initiatives have a crucial role to play in the age of ecological crisis, through transdisciplinary curricula is needed to illuminate issues associated with the unexpected and unpredictable changes in the environment.

There is a tendency by scholars arguing for a more sustainable future to position the “ecological crisis” as a fundamental reason for major educational reforms.
This will require however a significant paradigm shift facilitated by a pedagogical approach to transdisciplinary art, science and technology curricula that is capable of challenging existing paradigms, critically evaluating emerging alternatives, and fostering action based on new ways of understanding the biosphere.
The cloud is a concept of vapour (like STEAM), a medium that is another state in which the current understanding of cloud curriculum, as knowledge can exist as a shifting and ambient zone. The cloud questions the nature of time and space creating a literal topographic overview.

What should this overview look like?
The cloud is not an object but an experience and the curricula content are the molecules of moisture that act as part of the very medium in which we live and study.
Can the institutions absorb the idea of the cloud?
What role can critical pedagogy play in the face of the crisis? Chet Bowers asserts that we ought to analyze how assumptions are carried forward as metaphors, which are associated with attitudes towards science, technology, and nature. It is evident that one of our significant problems is to develop deep changes in the educational process to achieve a balance in education with comprehending and critiquing what constitutes the natural environment.

The question is what and how?
The adaptability of the curricula is one of the most positive solutions. The workshop aims to address the educational and cultural dimensions of the ecological change by presenting and discussing transdisciplinary educational issues associated with the current challenging situation towards meaningful solutions.

Copenhagen and Prague workshops 2012

The proposal was to initially run two international workshops to generate and build an internationally recognised plus Leonardo endorsed art and science cloud curricula by focusing on the establishment of an initial basic unit/module outline. The artsci wiki is colonised by contemporary scholars who have suggested and created attributes and course work that could be undertaken to produce the foundational set of understandings to enable students to engage in the world of art and science.

This foundational outline that has been developed would allow other units/ modules/ courses etc to grow. The outline will create an organic network of current art and science curricula.

The workshops were held in Copenhagen and Prague and you can visit the results on the workshops.

The wiki format allows for this proposed activity to address a growing interest in developing transdisciplinary teaching and learning methodologies in the area of art and science to explore emerging multi-layered world views. The project is to develop a working model of transdisciplinary art and science education, augmenting the creative arts, design and media education. It is crucial that the unique qualities found in the art and science education develop and adopt new strategies and act as a bench mark for this rapidly changing environment.

The project aims to use the wiki to affect a shift in the perception of art and science students and staff toward an understanding of new paradigms of research and learning that challenge and transcend disciplinary boundaries. The curriculum will privilege metacognitive interrogation of content and (re)visioning of traditional disciplinary research methodologies using a syncretic integration of heuristic and practice-based inquiry.
